Cold Sore Triggers – 3 Steps to minimise your cold sores

Cold sores can be painful, embarrassing and come with exhausting symptoms, which are very common cold sore triggers.

While our herlip® Cold Sore Rapid Relief Gel will visibly improve your cold sore blisters within 24 hours, we want to help you avoid flare-ups by minimising your susceptibility to triggers.

In this blog, we’ll help you:

  1. work out what your cold sore triggers are
  2. develop strategies to avoid triggers
  3. work out what to do if cold sores appear.

What are your cold sore triggers?

Cold sores are red, painful blisters that appear around the lips, mouth and face. They are a symptom of herpes simplex type 1, a virus contracted through skin-to-skin contact.

Although herpes simplex mostly lies harmlessly dormant in the body (a nerve structure called trigeminal ganglion), certain triggers can cause a “flare-up” of the virus, resulting in the appearance of cold sores, and often other symptoms like muscle aches and swollen glands.

If you have herpes simplex, it’s essential to work out what your “triggers” are so you can do your best to avoid setting them off in the first place. Some common triggers include:

  • hot sun or wind
  • a cold, flu or other illness
  • a weakened immune system
  • stress and poor sleep
  • hormonal fluctuations

If you’re having difficulty identifying triggers, try keeping a diary of flare-ups.

Unusual triggers

For some, more uncommon factors can be the cause of cold sores. These can include:

  • dental visits (pressure on the lips/mouth during treatment may trigger blisters)
  • damaged, dry or cracked lips
  • significant hormonal changes like pregnancy or menopause.

How do you avoid cold sore triggers?

Although our herlip® Cold Sore Rapid Relief Gel will visibly improve the appearance of blisters within 24 hours, we know that, ideally, you want to avoid triggering them altogether.

Here are some of the best ways to avoid cold sore triggers.

Manage stress, anxiety and sleep

Stress, anxiety and sleep levels can majorly affect cold sore onset.

Mindfulness meditation can reduce everyday stress. However, if you struggle with tension and anxiety, consider talking to a professional — therapies like DBT (dialectical behaviour therapy) can be highly effective.

Sleep is crucial. Ideally, aim for seven to nine hours of uninterrupted sleep per night. Quality sleep boosts immune system function and reduces susceptibility to stress. If you struggle with sleep, talk to your doctor.

Consider dietary factors

Although diet alone will not prevent cold sores, examining what you eat could help.

The amino acid arginine, present in foods such as chocolate and peanuts, aids the replication of the herpes simplex virus. Reducing arginine intake may help fight the virus long term.

In contrast, the amino acid lysine may block the virus from replicating. Foods high in lysine include lean beef, chicken, fish, cheese, tofu and legumes, but supplements are the best way to increase lysine intake. Before taking any supplements, consult your doctor.

Boost your immune system

A healthy immune system will discourage flare-ups of herpes simplex.

Some steps you can take to boost the strength of your immune system are to:

  • eat lots of fruits and vegetables
  • exercise regularly
  • maintain a healthy weight
  • minimise alcohol consumption
  • avoid infection by washing hands regularly.

"I would definitely recommend having this on stand by if you too suffer from this unsightly wound."

I’m a regular sufferer through summer from burnt lower lip, resulting in blisters and cold sores. As a result it usually takes 2 weeks of chemist products to see any healing results. This is the first time I’ve tried Herlip by recommendation and I was instantly impressed. The colour disguised the redness, and dried the wound instantly. I was so impressed I never missed any of my social functions. Day 3 of using Herlip and the healing results are remarkable.

"At last an effective Cold Sore Cream that doesn’t just sit on the lip and do nothing."

I finally have a cold sore cream the actively works to stop the cold sore in its tracks. My method was to vigorously rub Herlip onto the infected area. The positive outcome is noticeable within hours of the application. I applied it immediately after I got the tingle on the lip. It stopped the blisters progressing to raw stage. All in all, it had amazing results and will definitely be using it as my go to coldsore treatment

"Amazing results & i love
the applicator"

“I loved the way it was packed. In a little pump…so clean and hygienic and not a tonne of product comes out when you press down. Unlike zovirax. And the colour covered up the white and red blister that usually comes with cold sores I get PLUS it matches the foundation. The smell was very pleasant too.
All in all, it had amazing results and will definitely be using it as my go to coldsore treatmen.”

Try herlip® today if you're not 100% happy with the results, we will refund you. That is our Smile Guarantee
