What is a cold sore?
A cold sore is a fluid-filled blister or a cluster of blisters that appear on your lips and/or around your mouth. Cold sores are also called fever blisters, oral herpes, or herpes labialis.
Cold sores, fever blisters, or recurrent herpes labialis are annoyingly painful blisters. They break out, leak fluid, and crust over. Before they start to go away.
What causes them to crack and split?
Because the scabs that form are not flexible at all, these painful scabs often crack when you move your lips, adding to the painful annoyance.
When you smile, talk, or move your mouth in anyway, the blister or scab cracks causing a form of facial trauma. It is common for swelling to occur in and around the cold sore, so do not be overly alarmed if/when this happens. Before the healing process can recommence, any obvious signs of damage must heal.
Depending on the severity and depth of the cold sore will depend on how badly it cracks.
